Position Scope
As a Sr. Mechanical Engineer, you will lead a small team of engineers as they provide mechanical engineering support for commercial projects and design modifications to the plant at Carbon Engineering’s Innovation Center. The majority of your time will be spent working along side your team reviewing and developing mechanical engineering deliverables. Your focus will be reviewing deliverables for completeness, designing piping systems, conveyors, and equipment, ensuring your team has the people, skills, and tools necessary to complete the work requested of the mechanical team, and mentoring the junior mechanical engineers. Working from the office, home, and traveling to engage with customers, partners, and oversee their work is expected.
Responsibilities
Technical:
- Support projects through completion of engineering deliverables
- Review equipment datasheets, piping specifications, mechanical drawings for commercial projects
- Complete the mechanical engineering for plant modifications including isometrics, BOM, equipment/vessel design, and pipe flow calculations.
- Provide progress against milestones/deadlines to management.
- Abide by the standards and policies of Carbon Engineering and the projects you are assigned.
- Foster and maintain a positive culture within the Engineering Team; a questioning mindset and recognize failure as a learning opportunity.
Leadership:
- Collaborate with management and project managers to set deadlines for deliverables.
- Communicate management objectives and deadlines to direct reports.
- Recommend adjustments to staff allocations.
- Identify constraints to achieving engineering objectives or deliverable deadlines and define the resources required to overcome these (e.g. new hires, software, equipment).
- Identify and support training opportunities for staff.
- Lead the onboarding of new hires into the Mechanical Engineering team, to ensure they develop both the technical understanding and personal fit needed to excel in their position.
- Mentor, support and guide subordinate engineers in their professional development.
- Set annual objectives and conduct performance reviews for direct reports.
- Provide input on job descriptions for the mechanical engineering team
- Interview potential employees.

- Identify, report, and resolve unsafe conditions, processes or actions within the workplace.
- Ensure that all environmental and safety related incidents, accidents, and near misses are reported in the appropriate timeframe and investigated in line with company policy.
Education and Experience
Education:
- BSc in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent
Experience:
- P.Eng registered or able to register with EGBC and stamp engineering documents
- 8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, mining plants, or chemical plants
- 1+ years experience leading a team of engineers
Key Competencies
- Familiarity with typical plant engineering deliverables (Design Basis, Heat and Material Balances, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, piping specifications, isometrics)
- Familiarity with cooling towers, precipitation reactors, filtration, centrifuges, solids handling, calciners, turbomachinery, conveying systems, refractory
- Familiarity with Quality Management Systems
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to distill complex problems into simple solutions.
- A self-starter with the ability to work independently towards multiple deadlines with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment.
- Thrive on doing things that have not been done before (explorer mindset) and tackling challenging problems.
